PYMNTS: Amazon Captures 59% of AI-Assisted Purchases as Checkout Becomes the Battleground

PYMNTS Intelligence's report "Will the 2026 Shopping Season Go Agentic?", released on October 30, 2026, shows that Amazon accounted for 59% of consumers' most recent AI-assisted purchases. Across overall online shopping, Amazon represented 29% of consumers' starting points for online retail research but 49% of completed primary purchases. The report notes that the two figures come from different distributions and are not tracking results from the same conversion funnel, but the direction is worth noting.
AI is already changing where shopping begins. According to the report, about 132 million U.S. adults have used AI to buy something, and 58.4 million have used AI tools to start online shopping research. However, only 62.9 million are willing to let an AI agent both select and purchase, and just 36.8 million allow an AI app to store their bank card. Another 57.5 million AI-assisted shoppers say they use AI to research items they previously searched for on Amazon, and 54.5 million of them ultimately place their orders on Amazon.
The report calls this gradual process the "delegation ladder": the share willing to let an agent both select and purchase fell from 32% in September 2025 to 24% in August 2026. The report argues that a viable agentic checkout is closer to a corporate card with limited credit—capped amounts, designated merchants, and a clear purpose—rather than handing unlimited purchasing power to AI.
